When you learn how to make pies from the master.
My mom bakes every day- every day, she makes cookies, pie, cream puffs, or something in that sweet order and from scratch.
And even though she can make those sweet things with her eyes closed and turned around backward
she still followed the recipe to the “t.”
My mom doesn’t take shortcuts or deviate from the recipe; her 86-year-old hands move gracefully.
My mother made a blackberry pie from blackberries that she picked last summer.
My mom freezes her measured blackberries in four-cup bags ready to use.
Gabriel used the leftover pie dough to make his little pie-
not quite the same, but we didn’t tell him that.
à la Proust... the smell and taste of love he will never forget.

Does Gabriel call both of you "Va"? When my nieces and nephews were young, my dad was "Pop-Pop" When they had children of their own, and their dad (my brother in-law) was "Pop-Pop", their children spontaneously started calling their great-grandfather "Pop-Pop-Pop". I always loved that!

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker's man
Bake me a cake as fast as you can
Pat it and prick it and mark it with "B"
Put it in the oven for baby and me
For baby and me
For baby and me
And there will be plenty for baby and me

Frank started teaching our granddaughter Zoë to measure by weight when she was little - I have a wonderful photo of her standing on a ladder wearing one of my aprons with a big smile - she looked at me and said "I cooking, Grandma". That has been our special phrase since then. She know bakes beautiful galettes for family gatherings.

I love, love that Gabriel is getting this experience with Va.
I have made pie with my grandson once, but need to do it more often. The experience is a treasure. It is amazing your mother bakes every day. I eat too much when I bake, so try to do it only once a week.
