When Are You Coming to France? The French la Vie Dates for 2025

 

The French la Vie, we believe that the best way to experience the heart of Provence is by exploring its picturesque towns and villages through the eyes of its people. That's why we curate intimate groups of no more than four guests and create a one-week itinerary around handpicked brocantes, stunning landscapes, and charming villages, allowing you to immerse yourself in the Provencal lifestyle.

 

 

During your stay, we'll have ripe occasions to connect with antique dealers and visit markets and brocantes. There are so many of them you will lose count! We will visit at least 19 of them, the best of the best. We will take a peek into my antique/brocante friends' homes, who generously invite us into their world, where you can see how they created their homes with their antique finds, share a meal with them, and, of course, we will visit various antique dealers' spaces, and each one will tempt you with their collections. We aim to fill your senses with delicious moments that will fill you with joy, longing, and more to carry the experience for years.

 

 

 

 The French la Vie offers a unique voyage of experiencing Provence with someone who has lived in and loved the area for over thirty-five years and who is happy to share what they have come to know as graceful and heartfelt.

The cost of our one-week journey includes:

• Seven nights accommodation with shared bathrooms in my home.

• Transportation: We arrange a group transfer from Marseille on the first day at 11 am and a return transfer to Marseille airport, hotel, or train station (arrival at the airport at 9 am).  And all transportation during the French la Vie week (in a minivan)

• All meals: French breakfast and seven lunches and dinners. We will do a mix of charming restaurants, picnics, and hosted meals at my friend's homes, with drinks included.

• My services as a bilingual guide for all brocantes, flea markets, and planned activities. 

• Packing material is provided, and detailed guidance on how to send your treasures home, whether by mail, plane, or container.

• We will visit places in Marseille, Aix en Provence, Lourmarin, Cotignac, Carpentras, Isle sur la Sorgue, and other delightful villages.

When you sign up for your French la Vie week, a non-refundable 2.000 Euro deposit will secure your spot. The remaining amount is to be paid two months before the set date of your visit. Payment is accepted either by international bank transfer or through PayPal. (You will need to add a 4.0% service fee to cover PayPal’s service fee.)

Linens What to do With Them?

 The antique dealer was genuinely puzzled as I loaded bag after bag of his old linen and hemp towels and sheets, "What do you do with these? Do you sew?" 

I felt cheeky when I replied, "Other than wrapping it around me while walking in the garden when there is a full moon? I use it for what it was meant for bagging grains, drying dishes, covering a mattress, or bread rising, as a tablecloth, and or wrapping up a dead pig.

He laughed, "A dead pig?"

"Of course," I teased, "Back in the day, they did, you know."

Ask me, go ahead, ask me how many times I folded and unfolded these to fit inside the dome.

 

Then they decided it would be funny to fall over because linens have a mind of their own.

The Tower of Babel heard a few new words.

 

I added a rusty key and velvet pin cushion apple to the linen tower. Next, I started to stuff the tower in the dome.

My original idea was to stand on the kitchen counter and put the dome over the tower.

But that wasn't going to work. You see, I don't think things through. I figure it out as I go.

But that damn apple pin cushion would not stay straight. Yes, I swore at that forbidden fruit, sneaky little thing!

Sure, I could have pinned it on, but hey, I didn't think of that until later.

Since putting the dome over the tower of linen was not a happening idea, I stuffed it instead... forgetting to put the velvet apple pin cushion in first. Ding Dong is my middle name.

At last: linen and hemp dishtowels were stuffed inside a glass dome.

Then funny enough, I heard a knock at the front door. Turning around, I saw Madame Provencal. Holding her market basket tucked in her elbow, she said, "Tsk, tsk, tsk... linen under a glass dome... Corey, Corey, Corey, I am sooooo disappointed in you! Running around in the garden with nothing on but a linen sheet is more your style. Please do not disappoint me now."

I hugged her, ran outside, and frightened my neighbors with no linens in sight.

 

Away it Goes

The 20-meter cube heads to Italy.

My friend asked me to buy for her « home away from home.»

Done.

Everything I found at second-hand shops, even the kitchen sink, throughout Provence in the pouring rain.

French la Vie: First Day

First day of the first group of the year. The four women who are here have been a wonderful group from the moment we met. The van was packed, from top to bottom, with their purchases of the day, under the seats, on the seats, in the trunk, and on their laps, and at times I wondered if we were going to fit!  I hope they like packing.

We came home to unload, have dinner, share stories, and now counting how many hours before we are back at it again.

Roman Artifacts at the Brocante

The French brocante offers more than disregarded dusty old things from someone's attic, and it offers more than hopeful boxes of disheveled, could-be treasures. The French brocante is not just a place to find unbeatable prices or the chance to find a Picasso. It is a living museum with touch-able history, where you can be the digger in an archaeological site, and best of all, it can be taken home.

French Husband and I met a dealer who specialized in Roman artifacts. The dealer has been collecting for years, and he started selling not so long ago. His stand was full of rare, interesting pieces. He freely shared his knowledge and stories. I felt like a sponge, soaking up every word. I think I must have asked two thousand questions, mostly: "What is this?"

I must admit I usually spend most of my time looking for things that speak in muted color romance, old things that have more than their fair share of age, and brocante items that have little monetary value but rather tell a story, depict a feeling. I guess you could say I am a sucker for worn beauty 

Old coins, especially Roman artifacts, the dealer at the brocante told me, are often found in fields, where Roman roads traversed he mentioned that when a field has recently been toiled bits and pieces from the past are brought to the surface.

Driving home, I thought about the poppy fields soon to be with new insight. Battles fought, lives lost, bits and pieces of  unknown stories, and memories, buried within, unearthed over time giving us a key to the past... and red poppies bloom.

The Brocante Bug

How to recognize the brocante bug:

The person infected with the brocante bug usually is not in bed sleeping on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

Their homes have a certain look about them. 

A person who has the brocante bug usually stops the car if they see --

An old table leg, a patch of fabric, or worse, a peeling-paint-ruin-of-a-thing sticking out of a dumpster.

Usually, someone suffering from the brocante bug knows the only cure is to keep on antiquing, as there isn't a cure.

A person with the brocante bug prefers something old to something new. Unless it is food.

The brocante person often forgets how they look as they only have eyes for that old stuff.

The brocante bug is said not to be contagious... but a person who has the brocante bug badly knows that is not a fact to count on. For example, when you have the brocante bug badly, you know that if you take a friend to the brocante, they most likely will develop symptoms instantly, grabbing germs (pieces) that you would have gladly suffered with had they not been around.

A person with the brocante bug carries a big tattered-looking purse, if you dare call it that.

Instead of lipstick or perfume in their purse, they have loose change, a tape measure, and a flashlight.

Back home, she was considered a good girl, but in Paris, she was considered vraiment bien!

When her Mother wrote to her, she asked if she were cold. Augustine blushed from afar yet laughed out loud to herself. Her Mother's letter continued. Mme. Chier wondered if her daughter had purchased a new dress or two. Augustine wrote in perfect penmanship that the style was similar to Marseille, so she hadn't bought any dresses, but she did come across a fur coat at work that came in handy.

"Darling child," her Mother responded, "Please do tell me of your impressions of the Eiffel tower, Notre Dame, and the other sites you have seen. You have not mentioned a word of their beauty to me? And whatever do you mean you "came across" a fur coat at work?"

"Oh, Maman, Paris is beautiful, and I have found that I can-can...................."

He has been with the French la Vie every step of the way. He is a big help and adds so much fun to the mix by teasing, carrying packages, driving, giving motorcycle rides, and so much more, like assisting with buying, translating, and finding stuff!

I think he might take over!

 

 

 

 

Dining Conversation

 

When you visit Provence, we will taste our way through the countryside.

We will do breakfast at a cafe,

lunch at a bistro,

tea at a salon du the,

an aperitif at a bar,

dinner at a typical French restaurant, and if you have room...

We will have dessert too.

I will translate the menu if you do not read French. Though I must tell you I will translate meat dishes as cow, pig, duck, horse... Cote du Boeuf: is a side of cow, okay?

But when it comes to the desserts, you will lick my face with happiness, even if I do not share. I will translate each dessert down to the speck of sugar detail.

You will have lavender creme brûlée                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    , and I will have Tarte Tatin with vanilla bean ice cream.

 

 

 

When you come to France, please wear elastic band pants.

Be prepared to walk, talk, and eat.

"Eat! No, do not say that... do not say eat to describe dining. Say, Dine." French Husband corrects me and adds, "And the brocante?"

"And we will go to the brocante after we pig out," I add with my lovely twang.

 

 

Because I love the brocante, I love to do the food thing more, can you believe that?

I don't know if I do.

We will go to the grocery store, the bakery, and the market...

And at the brocante, we will buy dishes, linen napkins, silverware, and glasses.

11 Years and We Picked up Within Seconds

“ Sometimes things are just made to happen. Our friends Corey Amaro and Yann Rolland-Benis were attending an antique fair in a village about an hour and a half away from us. Not wanting to miss out on an opportunity to visit with them we agreed to meet at the fair. Corey is an exquisite designer and has a huge following of clients that she shops for. So it was understood she would be working first, playing later.

The parking areas were filled to the brim, and the fair is large, I said to Ludmil oh dear, how will we ever find them? We haven’t seen them for over11 years . 10 minutes into our arrival who should tap me on the shoulder, Corey and Yann? We hugged, chatted briefly and encouraged Corey to continue with her work we’d text one another and meet up later . It was a really hot hot day and sooooo many people! We decided to eat early, like 11:30. Guess who made the same decision at the same place . Mind you there are 1,000s of people at this fair . Again a quick chat and Corey was on her way , and we were as well . Fast forward about 30 minutes, and I say to Ludmil, “ I don’t think I can stay out in this heat , I’m going to text Yann and tell him I’m sorry I’m overcome with the heat and need to head home . Corey wasn’t expected to finish for several hours. Just as I’m ready to call him, he calls me , and tells me the heat has got them headed home to their friend's house and would we like to come by! Yes, yes, yes. So we could get in the pool, cool off, and have the most delightful visit. It was as though we had seen them last week. Time closes when you have that kind of friend connection, we retold old stories and new ones, they now have grandchildren, we have great-grandchildren…. It was hard to head back home; we talked on the way out the door, more in the driveway, again as the car was pulling out; that’s how it is with those kinds of friends. 

Corey will be hitting the pavement at the fair tomorrow, but for one time and one time only, I’m really happy it was so hot, and we all had to take a break at the same time.

The French Dining Thing

During the French la Vie retreats, we do more than just go to brocantes…

Not only do we fill our suitcases, boxes, and whatever else we can stuff antiques into, we dine, oh boy, do we dine! France has an abundance of everything and delicious food culture, but you know that.

 

Grand Marnier soufflé, chocolate eclairs, tarte Tatin, brioche, Opéra, Paris-Brest, macarons, pain perdu, apricot tartlette, mousse au chocolat…

 

 

One sweet thing after another.

 

Most of the time, the groups who come would rather shop than eat; I kid you not. Sometimes, going to a restaurant, which is planned, is changed by a group vote to grab a bite and go on to the next brocante.

How many brocantes can we stuff in one day?

How many delicious meals can we forego to do so?

None. We do it all.

When we grab something to eat, trust me when I say it is still delicious, remarkable, and worth every single little bit, even when it’s just pizza freshly made out of a pizza truck with a wood-burning stove.

 

 

The cafe scene is a must. Seriously, how can you come to France and not sit at a café? But there are cafés, and then there are cafés, and when you live here, you know which ones to go to. I like the ones that still have tablecloths on their tables and have that old romantic atmosphere or the straightforward, untouched ones that make you feel like you’ve gone back in time.

 

Yes, that is one of the most beautiful champagne buckets I have ever seen, filled with glass wine stoppers that look like ice cubes. So original.

 

 

The food culture in France doesn’t just stop with the food. It includes all the elements that go along with dining. The tablecloth, the grand serviettes, the faïence dishes, silverware, tabletop decor… The list goes on and on. The tabletop decor can be found at the brocante, just as I have said about the beaucoup, beaucoup French antique linens that could cover the planet if laid out. In France, it is not unusual to have an apéritif dish and entrée dish, dinner dish, a salad dish, a cheese dish, and a dessert dish, and that is for one meal. Then times that amount of dishes by centuries of French cuisine: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If laid out, antique French dishes could cover the solar system.

You might think I’m exaggerating, but I think the tabletop decor and France could cover the universe. At least the Brocantes are loaded with dishes, glassware, silverware, and everything else that involves dining.

 

Food lovers in France go way back.

 

 

And stemware, I have to say something about French antique stemware…

At the Brocante, if you took all the stemware lined up, there might not be a wave left in the oceans.

And we won’t even talk about French wine.

 

We are fortunate to dine in private homes during the French la Vie. When I travel, I always wonder what is behind the door, if only I could go into someone’s house and see how they live —well, during the French la Vie, that comes true. Superhero Brocanteurs

The AMAZING FOUR, Patricia Conte-Lynch, Barbara Willis, @Gloria McKinnon, and Vintage Supply Co. are True brocanteurs! Three of them endured not having their suitcases for the ENTIRE TRIP, one of them had their flight canceled, losing a day of our adventures together, we endured a heatwave, a van that wouldn’t start after dinner far from home base, and yet none of them lost their focus or joy! Brocante Trueheart's! Also, a shout out to Valarie Gerlach Jolly for introducing me to Patrica, Barbara, and Jeanette. 

I have found many beautiful things at the brocante, but nothing compares to the joy I have seen in sharing this experience with others.

French la Vie… Good Friends, Good Finds, and a Crazy Goof

 

We are doing the brocante scene with other passionate brocanteurs and buzzing conversation about what we have found, what we have seen, what we have missed, what we have learned, and where we are going. It is refreshing and deep gratitude to share after years of covid restrictions, aggressive politics, gun violence, and war: a breath, a natural breath of fresh air.

I think that means that they LOVE the brocante

Maybe just maybe as much as I do.

AND they must like hanging out with me.

No, I did not bribe them to join me.

These ladies, the four of them, literally can shop without dropping.

Our van was one stuffed potato. Packages everywhere:

Under our seats, on our laps, bulging out of the trunk, no room to move your legs, nor turn your head...

Happy, happy, happy place smack dab in the middle of the van stuffed with brocante heaven.

These women have shops and or give classes using antique textiles.

When You Come to Provence

 

 

If you come to Provence take time to be time to let Provence get under your skin and into your heart. Provence is a place to wander, taste the countryside, soak in the sounds, and follow your thoughts until they are just a mountain of softness and valleys of delight.

Provence is spread out like a quilt of many colors starting with the sky and everything between it and the blue sea, from the olive trees, vineyards, tiled roofs, confit pots, cigales, and rosé, and rows of lavender and stone walls.

Twins in Antique Nightdresses

 

We found a pair of recently dyed navy antique nightdresses.

Mine is in cotton and Cindy's is in linen.

Nightdresses in white are very easy to find at every brocante.

I wish someone would dare and pay me to find 500 in a month.

What makes these two so unusual is the oversize eyelet sleeves.

We bought and modeled them.

Cindy is such a fun-loving person modelling is my new gig.

Even considering the delicious lunch was three hours long, we are having an ideal time!

Though all of us preferred to be out and about. The extra-long lunch was due to Mother's Day in France.

Thankfully, the meal was worth the wait, and the company was like being with old friends.

French la Vie

 

Our French la Vie Brocante journey started off with a perfect day. We visited four places from Marseille to our home.

The women feel like I have known them for years but have literally just met. That is what is so awesome about this experience

is the bond that is created for a passion of seeing beauty in the ordinary, and sharing the joy in discovering history and culture while at the brocantes.

 

We came to our home and each guest settled into their rooms.

The sweetest compliment, "If today were the only day of our time together it would already be more than I expected."

 Here is to showing these four lovely women a wonderful week. I am so honoured to show them my haunts.

 

Now off to bed as the day comes early and we have many people and places to go!

Brocante Count down----

 

The countdown to the French la Vie brocante adventure starts on Tuesday! Hasn't it been a long time coming? 

Four women will arrive ready for the hunt, when they leave another four arrive.

I told them to pack light. That this isn't a fashion show so bring as little as possible.

I have been getting things in order: The bedrooms, the itinerary, the grocery list...

The brocante, the hunt, the fun, the reason to be,

is the easy part.

Yann is taking time off to drive and be my assistant.

Secrets in the Attic Part Two

The other day I wrote about being so immersed in looking through boxes in an attic

that I didn't even react when a rat fell on my shoulder. Recalling that moment now causes me to shudder 

and honestly want to vomit. I have a serious addiction to old things. 

 

Judy, a longtime reader of French la Vie sent me an email regarding my blog post.

Judy's story sharing did not disappoint. I asked her if I could share it with you ...

 

"Mice, rats, and spiders would do me in no matter what the treasure was.  Add a bat to the mixture and I would probably faint.  Once when my sister was alone at her Montana home, her dog alerted her in the middle of the night that there was a grizzly bear outside.  She got her gun but she keeps the shells in her living room 2 steps down.  She miscalculated where the steps were in the darkness and fell to the floor.  She felt something swoop over her head.  When she reached the lights, she saw a bat on the beam.  She went to the closet to get a broom to try to swat at the bat and a mouse ran out of the closet.  She spent the rest of the night in a chair where she could see the bat, see outside to make sure the bear wasn’t going to break in, and scanned the floor for the mouse.  Of all the creatures, she was most afraid of the mouse.  We grew up on a farm and saw mice often, but never liked them.  (She only keeps the gun for protection.  Bears have been known to break into houses though it is very rare)."

Secrets in the Attic

 

Up in an attic, secrets are told tucked away in boxes, stuffed in baskets, locked in safe boxes,

buried in forgotten letters, or left aside without thought by someone who never came back.

I enjoy going through things in attics, not so much the dust, nor the little creatures that pop up without saying hi.

There is usually a discovery or two, and stories that follow are worth the mice, and spiders who claim the empty space as their home.

Have you ever had a mouse run up your leg?

I had a rat fall on me, yeah I didn't even scream as I was way too into a box of old papers to notice.

 

That is when I realized I have a serious addiction.

But then you already knew that crazy factoid about me.

Three years ago, this photo was taken on the last French la Vie.

Then Covid turned everything upside down.

Last week I teamed up with Red Shed Tours leading a group of 12 women around

Provence and the brocantes.

Back in the saddle feels better than ever.

The next group arrives on May 24. They have waited three years!

Finally, we will meet and create stories and find things that tell us their stories.

 

 

Happy Brocanting

 

 

This morning we got up early and

drove three hours to a brocante dealer’s home where stacks and stacks of boxes greeted us.

Paper, paintings, textiles, and things that made me giddy.

It was a mother lode of happiness.

 

Hours later, we pack the car and returned home three hours later.

One of my favorite things to do in all the world is to be in a garage, or an attic, or a place full of boxes just waiting for me to go through them and find wonderful old things that are waiting to come home with me.

Now, the work begins to put things up for sale, box them up, and kiss them goodbye.

Brocante Finds

 

The brocante let me count the ways of how much I love it.

1) The culture, history, and the stories that are theirs and shared among the dealers.

2) The quality of the objects, the workmanship how, they were made and kept through generations.

3) Each piece is unique. Mostly, one-of-a-kind type of pieces. Certainly not mass-produced.

4) The hunt, the joy of finding and sharing.

5) Creating a home with brocante finds.

6) The people I meet at the brocantes.

 

Okay, those are some of the reasons why I love the brocante.

 

 

 

All the pieces in this photo were found at the brocante. The newest find is the hand-painted, long and narrow,

canvas-backed painting. It was part of the exterior (under glass) decor for a bakery.

The pieces are from the 1900s.

 

 

The littlest detail is a piece of silver thread altar lace.

What One Can Find at the Brocante

 

What you can find at the brocante  if truth be told is pure delight

the possibilities are endless and surprising.

There are miles and miles of fairs and stacks of boxes and places to go all over France.

The list of things one can find is from simple everyday pieces to the rare and unusual and often at an affordable price.

A great way to see France and learn about its culture and history is to go to the brocante.

 

 

The brocante never ceases to amaze me even if I am a bit jaded by certain things. That is one of the sinkholes to antiquing

the more I learn, the more I know, the more I seek out pieces that are harder and harder to find.

Sure I buy for clients that is my

work and I buy what they ask me to find which is not necessarily those pieces that are hard to find and one of a kind.

Finding things, the hunt, the challenge is what I enjoy most, that is the part of my work that makes the other 60 percent worth it. 

Carrying, packing, accountant, is not so fun.

French Antique Guessing Game

I saw this small circular wooden box and had to ask the dealer what it was. Inside the box was a smooth agate that had a tiny bowl-like center.

"Agate enhances mental function, improves concentration, enhances the perception and analytical abilities.

It is a soothing and calming gemstone that heals inner anger, anxiety and helps in the strengthening of relationships.

Physically, Agate addresses visual, digestive, and uterine functions." via wiki 

 

The outer box and its lid were worn and oiled, that is why the wood is so dark, but it wasn't greasy.

 

My first clue, the dealer's stand, was so obvious that literally if it had been a snake it would have yelled out, "SERIOUSLY!"

Why this object jumped out at me is still a mystery that the brocante haunts, "Why to notice this and not that?"

Louis Sixteenth Going Strong

 

    

 

This is a Louis 16th sofa leg, without a ribbon around its knee.

 

The real thing, standing strong even though it hasn't exercised in years.

What is its secret?

The leg is steady on its heel and stands as straight

 as the day it was carved.

How many sofa legs can stand up to that claim?

The hand-woven fabric has endured too.

Do wonders never cease?

Certainly, many couch potatoes have planted themselves here.

Next time you buy something new,

ask yourself will it be around in two hundred years?

Will it look as good then, as it does today?

Those Louis' knew the secret to long-life...

Look What the Neighbors are Throwing Out

 

Okay, from now on I am going to post things that I see people are throwing out on the street.

Hence, the title "Look what my Neighbors are throwing out."

Spotted these on the street in Paris.

Mid-century reproduction of the classic frog chairs, yes that is what they are called:

"Fauteuil Crapaud"

usually, the feet are not seen as fabric or passementerie hangs from the seat to the floor... but these are not the real deal.

Short legs, large back known for comfort.

It appears that their cat loved them to death.

Au Bain Marie in Paris

 

As I am in Paris counting down the days before the baby arrives with Chelsea and Co.

I am rediscovering old haunts and new wonders. Au Bain Marie

(A bain-marie, a type of heated bath, is a piece of equipment used in science, industry, and cooking to heat

materials gently or to keep materials warm over a period of time. A bain-marie is also used to melt ingredients for cooking)

I stumbled upon while walking back and forth from our apartment to Chelsea and Co.'s apartment (five miles) Au Bain Marie is 

chock full and I mean CHOCK FULL!

The window display changes often enough that I could not help myself to go inside and take a peek. A mixture of the old and new tabletop is available

anything and everything for the table. Of course, I wanted to set a table right there and then with the variety they had.

Silver, faience, egg cups, crystal, salt shakers, silverware, teacups, plates, plates, plates, majolica, champagne buckets, baskets, pitchers, creamers, wine paraphernalia, picnic baskets, knife rest...

etc. etc. etc. etc... etc.!

 

 

 

"Printed tin plates inspired by famous porcelain and faience services from the 18th and 19th centuries.

These plates are decorative, therefore you have to cover them with a transparent glass plate if you want to use them with flatware.

You can use the tin plates directly for finger food." Au Bain Marie

 

• These are wonderful for picnics as well.
