Where there’s a will, there’s a way

Sweet Potato Wisdom

The other day, my mom decided she wanted to make sweet potato fries. As you know, sweet potatoes are no joke when it comes to cutting—hard as a rock! I suggested maybe boiling them a bit first to soften them up, but she waved that off.

Then she said, “I remember what my mom used to do when something was too hard to cut…” And before I could ask, she pulled out a hammer and started tapping—okay, pounding—the back of the knife with it.

I cracked up and said, “You’re going to break the knife!”

She just smiled and replied, “Oh no, knives are stronger than you think.”

And guess what? She cut the potato, just like that. It worked. It really worked.

Even writing this now makes me laugh—it was so unexpected and so completely her. I think I’m going to start using a hammer too when I get home. Sweet potatoes, beware.

I love this. I think your Mom and I would get along well.

How clever your mom is to figure that out. I am going to remember that one. As we get older, we need to be creative on how we do things. Good job!
