Bringing in the New Year

Should old friendships be forgotten
And never remembered?
Should old friendships be forgotten
And long ago times?

You’ll treat me to a drink, my friend,
And I will treat you too;
And we’ll share a cup of kindness still
For days of long ago.

You’ll buy your drink,
And I’ll buy mine,
And we’ll share a friendly drink
For old times’ sake.

The two of us used to run over the hills
And pick wild flowers together;
But we’ve walked many tiring paths
Since those old days.

We used to paddle in the stream
From morning until dinner time;
But wide oceans now lie between us
Since those old days.

Here’s my hand, my trusted friend—
Give me yours as well—
And let’s take a hearty, friendly drink
For old times’ sake.

A group of old friends gathered at our home last night. Everyone brought something to eat. There was enough food for an army and enough cheese that the cows could probably go on strike for the next ten years.

We ate, drank, danced, laughed, and played cards—and then laughed some more.

Olivia turned in early. The rest of us stayed up, dining, moving between the kitchen and the dining room table to play cards, then back into the kitchen to dance.

It was a lovely evening—simple, generous, and joyful—just people being together, happy and hopeful for the year ahead.
