Halloween

How many trick-or-treaters did you have?

The street in front of our house has been completely torn up because of a broken water pipe. There are detour signs preventing cars from using the street, so I really didn’t expect to have many trick-or-treaters this year.

Halloween was never really a thing in France, but every year it seems to gain a little more popularity. Two years ago, I had over 200 trick-or-treaters!

Our little town held a Halloween party in the town square with lots of activities for the children. Around 4:30, everyone heads out to go from house to house collecting candy. Instead of saying “trick or treat,” the children simply say bonbons, which means “candies.” People of all ages participate in trick-or-treating here—even entire families go together.

This year, I had a little over 70 trick-or-treaters. And a ton of candy left over.

Every year for the last 20 years, I’ve written about Halloween. It’s a big deal with my mom. She always put on a party. Sadly, this year for the first time ever at 91, she hung up her witch’s hat, made me a little sad to think that tradition has ended.

  1. Happy Halloween! Amazed that you got that many trick or treaters. That’s a lot. Love the día de los muertos makeup!

I enjoyed hearing about Halloween in France. We were gone the night of the 31st, so I delivered treats to children in our neighborhood that afternoon. There are now so many events prior to Halloween–trunk or treat (handing out candy from the trunk of a car) at various churches and organizations, treat days in our grocery store, Boo at the Zoo, parties at The Children’s museum, country clubs, etc. Our grandson got braces on his teeth the day before Halloween, so he is not able to eat the sticky, gooey candy but can eat those candies that are hard or don’t have nuts or caramel (what’s the point?! The sticky ones are the best!)
