How French Husband asked me to Marry Him.

French husband proposed to me in a small neighborhood park in Paris.
His breath was swirling white from the cold; funny when you are first
in love, the things around seem brand new and miraculous,  seeing his
breath made me feel less cold. We sat on a bench. French husband handed
me a box of chocolates. Opening it I saw a simple gold band in one of
the empty chocolate spots. Oh. I looked up at him, and followed his
eyes…

Slouched over the park's fountain was a young man, obviously poor in
spirit, shaking from cold, he was holding a spoon over a lighter. I
looked back at French Husband, and tried to understand. French Husband
stood up, as if in a trance he went to the young man, put his arms
around him and held him for which seemed like eternity. He rocked him
and gently talked to him. Eventually, the two of them walked to the
nearby phone booth, later an ambulance came. French Husband walked back
to where I was sitting. He told me the young man was trying to shoot up
heroin- and yet he felt it was more than that. French Husband sensed
the young man was trying to kill himself, and he felt he needed someone
to hold on to.

At that moment I knew my answer would be yes.

The way to know the heart of a person is to see how they treat people they don't know when in need.

  1. How could you possibly say no to a proposal like that? That French Husband of yours – what a true gem.
I am loving reading these posts, Corey – real love stories beat romance novels anyday!

  2. yes, the way to know a person’s heart . . . . i wonder if any of your readers have their ways of knowing a person’s heart?

    Hi Catherine,
Oh I know they do! I hope they will write their responses to you here in the comment section too!
    Corey

  3. I always was told “Watch and see how your boyfriend treats his mother. If he has been shown how to respect his Mum by the example of his Dad you will see how he will treat you in the future….”

  4. To see how someone talks to a child tells you a lot about their heart.
Do they talk from their own stand point, upright and looking down?
Or do they get down on their knees and make eye contact, move themselves to the childs viewpoint and into their smaller world?
Do they take the time and effort to do this one small thing?
Small things make such a difference and show you so much about that person and their true feelings in their heart.

  5. I love these stories so much.

  6. I am lost for words! Your French Husband is one in a million.

  7. A True love story that has continued..He is a wonderful man,..other men need to read about FH 🙂

  8. That is so true. I once fell in love (shhh!) when I saw a young man being kind a patient with a Cub Scout who wanted to get out of the line. You did so well, I think, Corey…

  9. The Cooks Next Door

What an amazing story. i wish we saw more acts of genuine kindness and care like that. And yet I know some of us would have been too scared to even break into the situation and help. Sounds like you have a special husband.

  10. Oh Corey you’re so beautiful, so blessed, you make my heart sing, thank YOU. xo.

  11. You married a wonderful person, Corey!
Thank you for leaving me a nice comment on my needlepoint.

  12. I have chills, especially after I just read about the Marie sighting at the Petite Trianon covered in the book “An Adventure” from 1911. Very romantic.

What a special gift you were given. You were shown, right at that very moment, his heart. I’m sending this one to my daughter and her friends. I frequently tell them what to look for in a man – “washing the dishes is more important than sending flowers” and such things (I also won the husband lottery so they ask me). Your story is better than anything I could come up with on my own. I think one of the important parts here Corey is you. You were smart enough to know that moment was important, that seemingly small gesture showed you the world. I hope my daughter sees the small moments, the good ones and the bad ones, and can take from them the lessons they are giving. Bravo French Husband – Bravo!

From reading you for several years now, I knew that French husband was awesome in so many ways. You are blessed, but so is he!

  15. I would have said yes too! You skipped the part how you got from swimming to getting to Paris. I love the stories, better than all the junk on tv.

  16. That’s exactly why I told my husband “yes”. We are both very lucky.

  17. Your story today touched me ~ I have a younger brother who is a recovering herion addict. While it has been a few years since he stopped, it still is a long and difficult road to recovery for him. When I read your post today….I couldn’t help but think if had been my brother your husband approached that day…perhaps he would have listened…perhaps his life would have been different. Your husband is indeed a very special person.

  18. This is one of the most touching proposals I have ever heard. My heart skipped a beat and appreciate your telling of it.

  19. Sheila Cain-Sample

My heart just swelled, tears brought to my eyes. How wonderful he was to do that for that young man, how did he know what to do? His heart told him as did yours.

  20. OMG I have goosebumps. What a wonderful man. You two are very special people.

But regarding the beauty contest, though most of us can relate to Miss Louisette the 16th, you can see Miss Down and Out will be back next year. I am sure with some nip and tuck work with some needles and implants, she’ll be on her game again.

  24. That is so beautiful, Corey! My friends have some beautiful proposal stories, but I think yours is my favorite I have heard thus far. Thank you for sharing beauty with us every day!

  25. Nancy in Az

    Corey, what a beautiful story.
I glimpsed my daughters heart when she was 10. I was waiting in the car while she dropped something off a a post box. She ran past a beauty shop, stopped and turned around. As she walked back to the door I thought she was going to look at something in the window, but she stopped at the door and opened it for a woman using a walker.
That day I knew without a doubt her heart was good.

  26. How can a heart not love someone like Yann. He has a good heart to care for that young man. He is a very romantic man and I am so touched that you would share those moments with us.

  27. Though his proposal was elegant, the circumstances were certainly a sign…a very good sign. May you two have many happy years together.

  28. Corey you have such a beautiful love story!

    Hi Lemon Tree Tami
The French have a saying when someone says a personal compliment… they say, “I try.” So I guess you could say I try to be positive on my blog it is good therapy for me.

    Dear Corey
How wonderful a marriage you have and how lucky you are to have found each other.
    Kathy

  52. Wow- what a gift, to see the truest sense of the person you would marry. Does Yann ever speak of that moment? Does he realize how amazing it was?

  53. What a beautiful story and a beautiful man. It’s so true that watching the interactions with others really tell the tale

  54. Yann and you are kindreds. You are much the same as him, simply by recognizing it.
Ah, what a true gentle spirit he has. Keep your hooks in him, Corey!!! You two are truly blessed.
