Brocante Adventure and the Messy House

brocante france

Brocanting in France means that while you are looking for antiques you are able to see many charming villages and can interact with the locals. You spend much time driving around the countryside, drinking coffee in cafes, having a sandwich at a stand up bar, shoot the bull with others over a glass of wine and overall have a very different taste of France.

Brocanting takes your senses on a trip.

The three bloggers who did not know each other and who I barely knew myself, have bought a truck full… and for once in my life I am not exaggerating. When we went to pick up the truck the three of them looked at each other and said, "Corey this is way too big!"

I laughed to myself and said, "You'll see."

Checklist for brocanting in France if you plan to do it big and by yourself:

  • Money, you must have a budget and stick to it. A price point.
  • Packing: Tape, boxes, bubble, newspaper, ropes, blankets, marking pens…
  • Keep an inventory list of what you bought, who you bought it from, and how much it cost.
  • A truck, or a very large car, (or a suitcase if you just buy one or two things) and two hands, and a whole lot of umph to get it together and sent out.
  • A map, a GPS, and a digital camera to take photos of the things you bought.
  • A cell phone.
  • Money (again)
  • A good attitude because it is stressful.
  • A large bag to carry your goods from the brocante to the car.
  • A good eye because you must pick amongst an ample harvest. Sturdy shoes: It is not a time to look cute.

traffic

No matter how well you plan your adventure you will come across traffic jams, you will get lost, you will have maps that do not make sense, face detours, have headaches, others will buy what you want, you will feel hungry at odd times and not find anywhere to eat, and when you finally arrive at a shop it might be closed. Yes it is a ball of fun, especially when you do it with a group of people… so you must roll with it or get rolled over.

The bottom line is: If you love the brocante, it is worth it. If you don't… well don't do it.

My home has become a warehouse with things that are not mine.

Some of you asked if I was being paid for this. No I am not.
Some of you asked if I was crazy. Yes I am.
Some of you asked if I would do this as a job? Never in a million years.
So why am I doing it? Because I am a brocante junkie….

who is glad for the experience: To be able to brocante with friends who love what I love. Who are willing to learn from one another and trust that it is all going to work out. Even at the expense of lack of sleep, packing at odds hours of the night and having my house looking like a bomb has gone off a few days before Christmas. Every room has boxes in it… even the bathroom.

Sharing a meal amongst the boxes.

We are packing the truck for their container today, and that is an adventure all by itself.

  10. You have a big heart and it shall come back to you two fold. Most people do not understand how bloggers can be instant friends. To find others that share your passion is wonderful. You have given your friends the best Christmas present ever.

  13. C- How about some information on how to arrange for a container and if there is a site for sharing containers?

  14. Niki Weippert

What fun!! Can I come? I know it’s lots of work. You are such a nice person to do that for people you have only know from your blog. Your husband sounds like a “jewel”. You’d better hang onto him. Merry Christmas to you and your family!!

For Christmas I want to come and sort through those boxes! Ohe what fun – long after you’ve cleaned up and caught up on your sleep you will all have such fun memories – ahhhh life.

  16. That is so funny! If I were one of your friends (there with you) I’d be really tempted to accidently pack some of your belongings in with mine! Your home is gorgeous even in a mess.
    Love and miss you.
    XOXOXOXOXOX Shea

I understand why you would do this, because I would do it to!!!! I would sacrifice my time and my space for the love of friendship and of old…. But, as much fun as it may be, I am sure you will be happy to claim your home back (and I am sure your family will too!)!!!!!

  21. “Roll with it or get rolled over.” Love it! Such a good attitude to take in brocante not to mention life.
Loved seeing all the loot! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  22. Oh,my. what a beautiful chaos! Thanks for letting us join in. I want to go to there.

  23. Elizabeth Harper

You are soooo brave showing off all the boxes and clutter.
It’s still easy to see your sense of style in the decor underneath it all. Please show us the after shot when the boxes are gone now that we’ve see the before.

  24. Corey, I know you think that your house is a mess but, I didnt even see what you were talking about, all I saw was really cute things! I would fit in with the crazies…I am really missing the French life right now! Forget the container girls send it to me! I would love to be a part of that shopping experience.
I also recieved the package that you sent me. It was such a lovely bundle. I adore everything in it and I can not wait to use it! Thankyou so much! You are so sweet and generous!

  25. What a wonderful friend you are. My friend is an antique junkie and at one point when she was running 3 antique stores you could not walk in her living room, of course that didn’t bother me,I loved it

  26. What crazy fun!!! Happy December, Corey!
    : )

  27. Corey, I must say it’s kinda fun sitting here in the comfort of my messy house (but I didn’t even partake any brocanting) and watch your brocanting sceneries. The madness is palpable indeed and very contagious! It’s very tempting to join your craziness! For a beginner course, maybe I’ll visit the one at Rose Bowl tomorrow. I can almost hear you proclaim, “Yes, Rain or Shine!”
    Merry Christmas!
    Catherine

  28. Rochambeau

  30. Angelica Bays

I think what I love most is your lovely picnic amongst your treasures!
Whoosh! I’m off to go look in your store!!

  31. Corey, you are such kind and wonderful lady!!!

  32. Hope you enjoy your home….when it returns!
(my place is like this everyday, its a maze of paintings and ‘stuff’ everyone who has ever lived here over the last 25 plus years, plus all the stuff I managed to acquire!)

  33. I wish Santa would bring me a red polka dot tablecloth-love it!

  34. I like the way you draped the grain sacks over the tables. I started to take out mine from the closet and draping them over the dinning table and the coffee table. What other ways can we use those grain sacks? Instead of just stashing them away. If I can find more use for them t can go out and buy some more. Can one have enough grain sacks? Wasn’t that the question you asked some time back?

  35. What fun! I know you are tired, but what wonderful memories. You live life, Corey and that cannot be bad.
You still managed to set a lovely table for your meal!

  36. Hasmin Cannon

    LOVING IT!!! ((hugs)) Corey. 🙂

  37. I can imagine you after the mess and fuss are over : feeling the quiet and the tidyness… and the emptiness too!

  38. Country French Judi

I just discovered this blog today. I am in heaven! I am only fortunate enough to vacation in france, can’t leave our four grown children behind to live in France so I only can dream. I love linens, you have to post more things for sale. Love it, love it, love it!! ! ! !

  39. You are the best BFF and brocanting babe could ask for.

  40. “You must roll with it or get rolled over.” Very nice, I will be saying that over and over in my head a lot, I think!

  41. Corey, do you know what those plants are in the pots next to the “Salon de The” photo? I want one!
