Orange Silk Carrot Wrap(s)

Behind the food platters that sat on pedestals, a woman stood in an orange silk dress with an intricate lace collar. Enticingly the colors blended taste, design and texture. My taste buds watered at the thought of asking her to hold one of the appetizers so I could take a photo.

Luckily I came to my senses.

Earlier that day I saw the orange silk dress at a shop, and had tried it on too. The saleslady thoughtfully added, "This dress will look better when you are tanned, and if you wear a padded bra it will give extra boost to your bust-line."

Admiring the woman in the orange silk dress, who without knowing it displayed the saleslady's ideas perfectly, I popped one of the appetizers into my mouth.

It was satisfying to taste perfection.

Orange Silk Carrot Wraps:

With a peeler peel some carrots into long thin strips.

Suntan the carrot strips by sautéing them lightly in a mixture of vegetable and sesame oil,  with a touch of crushed garlic and ginger.

When the orange has highlights of golden brown take the carrot strips out and lay them flat.

In the same pan sauté the shrimp, when their skin turns rosy take them out and roll them into the orange silk dress…. I mean the carrot strips…. pin the round balls of succulent wonder with a tiny clothespin.

Drizzle them with lemon juice before serving.

Orange is one of my favourite colours, being a redhead. What a clever but fiddly idea? Didn’t the shrimps slide out?

  2. Stunning colour, but best on darker skins – orange makes us blondes look washed out. What a charming post – your observation and eye for detail is so sharp and clever. Will definitely try out the carrot silk wraps!

  3. Orange, one of my favorite colors! interesting way of using mini clothes pins. 🙂

  4. Yum! And so cute too.

I am seeing coral and orange everywhere right now. I love coral so I am thrilled and I think the dress would have looked great on you my dear. Also, soooo love the clothes pins. Genious!

Fantastic recipe, I will try it. I must update my camera, your pictures make me want to pick the wraps off the screen and eat them.

  7. When you finish your first book, which I am sure you are working feverishly on when not attending lavish parties, you must, must, must write a cookbook, filled with your appetizing morsels and written in your very unique style.
Excuse me, I need to find some clothespins . . .

  8. thanks for the recipe
    thanks for you
    Love you

Oh, how I wish you’d asked her for the photo…then again, the voyeuristic nature of this photo foray into fashion would be lost if the participants were posing. Loving the orange!

  10. Glad you wore black. You looked stunning and very chic. The carrot/shrimp tasty delight will be tried in Kansas…probably on Christmas Eve. We always have shrimp something.
    hugs..

  11. Those silk-clothed shrimp look yummaceous!
Merci beaucoup for the recipe, ingenious! 🙂
I feel a little sorry for the clothespins, I guess they had to be discarded (reminds of flying business class with Austrian Airlines – they give you a tiny wooden clothespin with your cloth napkin).

I never would have thought of pairing shrimp with carrots. Was it yummy or simply gorgeous?
Beautiful orange dress, but I think you made the right decision.

I have got to give that carrot wrap a try.
BTW, you looked stunning in the black dress. I would never have been able to pull it all off with so little notice.

  15. yum. love the clothes pins and the colors. Thanks!

Nice appetisers. Orange needs a light tan but one doesn’t want to match the carrots ! Jx

Yummy! Everything perfect – the night, the dress (yours offcourse!), and… the French Open this afternoon!

    Corey,
You clever girl, you! Suntan the carrot strips. How brilliant you are with your words.

Love the idea for the carrots and scallops with clothes pins. It would be great for a tea party too.n I’m saving this one.

orange is a tough color to wear…it would better on you when you are tan is a polite way of saying it doesn’t look that great on you right now…Try a necklace in a orange color perhaps or coral would be good..or orange shoes! Thanks Corey, loved the way you gave the recipe. are the clothes pins for real? did they serve them at the party with clothes pins?

    Get again…
    your words are delicious.
Last night I was reading out your Chocolate in velvet shorts recipe to my daughter.
    She cried…STOP, stop mum…
    my mouth is watering….
    Yum
and as for an orange dress with delicate lace encircling your face…
    my advice.
Take the advice from the saleswoman
    tan
    bra
    hair
    and buy the dress…
    buy the dress.
    there will be another,
I can see the dress on you, accessorized with your handsome husband in his beautiful floral collar and dainty blue buttoned down, crisp white shirt

Wonderful idea ! Carrot wraps !
You may also pin the “bouchée” with a tiny wooden stick, less spectacular, but as useful as the “pince à linge” :o)

The shrimp wins the fashion competiton of the evening. The following day as the woman pegged her dress on the clothesline, perhaps she smiled.
Another prize awarded to the black strapless accessorized with the adoring poney-tail husband.

  25. Corey,
I dreamed of your wooden clothespins last night!
I had bought a large bag and realized only at home that they were too small to hold anything. *drats*

This is too adorable, and sounds absolutely delicious. Saving this recipe for that special outdoor garden party. Merci bien de l’avoir partagee!

I went to a party yesterday, after reading this post. The host had the most wonderful finely striped shirt with an orange silk polka dot tie, and his girlfriend was wearing a beautiful coral dress. It reminded me of FH’s wonderful shirt and the orange dress that was almost yours.
