Ok, I think it is a muffling apparatus, to seal the lips and hush the mouth’s from speaking blasphemy!!! -
If that thing is two feet long, that rosary is huge. Possibly hanging from a nun’s belt. My second guess is: The two knobs hold a strap that wraps around the piece covering the knees of a pilgrim who is kneeling as he makes his way to a shrine.
