Amazing Desserts

The last day of our group trip always leads us to Cassis—a tradition that’s the pearl in the crown. Cassis always shining no matter how many times we go. We gather for our final meal at Chez Gilbert, a family-run spot right on the port that’s been part of the town for generations. It’s a beloved place—locals from Cassis and even Marseille come regularly.

Next to Chez Gilbert is our fisherman’s house. Along the port, the old fishermen’s homes were built narrow and stacked side by side, with slips underneath where their boats would rest. Today, those slips have been transformed into restaurants, and shops, but if you look closely, you can still imagine the rhythm of daily life when the sea was the master.

Everything about Chez Gilbert is just lovely. Bob, the owner, is a character—always quick with a joke—and his daughters are now part of the clan working right alongside him. Some of the waitstaff have been there since they were all teenagers together with Bob, back when they worked for Bob’s father. They’re all well-known, full of personality, and a big part of Cassis.

There’s an easy old time elegance here: crisp white linen tablecloths, and napkins, and a menu that reflects the region with pride. The bouillabaisse is rich and satisfying, the fish perfectly prepared, and the desserts—well, they’re reason enough to go. There’s a fixed menu lunch or dinner at €50, easily the best deal in town.

You never leave hungry—not for taste, sight, experience, or the view. The only regret is having to say goodbye… until next time.

You know that old saying — “Life is uncertain, so eat dessert first!”

This place looks terrific! Kathie, I’d never heard that saying before, but I’m adding it to my lexicon thanks you!.

Too much of a good thing. 💶💶50 Euro’s is so worth it. We pay about $60 or more for two sandwiches. Prices have gotten crazy here for not so great of a meal.

  4. Yummy! Dessert first….always. ❤️
