Every summer when the lavender blooms in Provence, I’m reminded how connected this fragrant flower belongs to Provence—it’s as much a part of the landscape as the blue shutters, tiled roofs, and cicadas’ song. Lavender and Provence go hand-in-hand. One seems to cheer the other’s name.

Making lavender wands is one of those long lived traditions I admire. It begins with gathering fresh stems, long and straight, while the blooms are still full and fragrant. You hold the bundle gently, then bend each stem carefully back over the blossoms, creating a little cage of green around the deep violet scent. With patience, you begin to weave a ribbon—over, under, over again—tucking the flowers safely inside. It’s almost like braiding a memory.

The scent stays with you. Tucked in a drawer or resting on a windowsill, a lavender wand holds its perfume for years. And with it, a little breath of summer in Provence.
