Here Comes the Bride

Do you remember going to weddings as a child? I do.
With a million cousins, I must have gone to about 999,000 weddings — and I’m only slightly exaggerating.

But what is true from those early days is the bride.
To me, my cousins were — the most beautiful brides in the world.
– flowing dress, the veil, the bouquet of flowers, hair perfectly styled, abundant evident joy, and the long walk down the aisle with a slow graceful step. It was magical.

All I ever wanted to do was be near them, to smile up at them, to be a part of their moment.

And honestly, not much has changed.

Just this weekend, at the wedding of our dear friend’s daughter, I felt it all over again.
There she was — as beautiful as ever — walking gracefully down the aisle.

Later in the day a trail of little cousins followed her, with stars in their eyes, dreaming that one day, they might be like her.

  1. We lived opposite our church and from the age of 4 I went to all the weddings. Sometimes there would be 3 weddings. I would have to change my dress for each one! I could recite the wedding service when I was 8. Many years later I walked to the church for my own wedding…..60years ago. ❤️

  2. I only had one first cousin, and he eloped.

So, alas, as a child I only attended one wedding — that of a neighbor’s daughter. In working-class neighborhoods, receptions only had cake and fruit punch.

It wasn’t until high school. when a violinist girlfriend and I (piano) played music for weddings that I ever attended receptions with sumptuous buffet meals. We were allowed to be guests at the receptions, rather than mere “help.”
