Gruyère, Switzerland

Our niece Juliette and her husband Stephan invited us to Switzerland, to the Hotel Cailler. Before meeting them, we spent the night in Gruyères.

Little did we know that the utterly enchanting town had a Christmas market going on. It was charming — such a delightful surprise!

Gruyères itself is steeped in history: a beautifully preserved medieval town founded around the 12th century and crowned by its impressive hilltop castle, once home to the Counts of Gruyère.

The region is also famous for its Gruyère cheese, which takes its name not from the Count but from the surrounding countryside, where cheesemaking has been a tradition for centuries. Wandering the cobblestone streets was pure delight! How happy I am to be in tied to a wonderland. More to come-

  1. Beautiful Switzerland at Christmas, it’s such a lovely country. Enjoy…..I know you will!! God Bless ♥️🙏♥️

  2. For decades, every New Year’s Eve or Day (depending on our schedule) we make fondue containing a mix of Gruyère and Emmental cheeses, using lightly toasted sourdough bread cubes for dipping. Now I know where our Gruyère comes from!

  3. How wonderful to stay in such a beautiful place by chance! I wanted to step inside these pictures, they were so lovely. The Christmas market looks so festive too!

  4. Cory, oh to be in your pocket….castle, Christmas fair, cheese! Green with envy. Hope you are….no, I know you are having a wonderful time.

  5. Your visit looks beautiful ❤️ I love Swiss Christmas Markets.
Meanwhile, we are in Tuscany! Otherwise I would be thinking “she was so close!”

Gruyère really smells like …Gruyère! With all of the fondue pots simmering with the local cheese it is an overwhelming sensation. Though your photos portray the visual charm as well. Perhaps the Christmas market brought other aromas like mulled wine and gingerbread.

    1. So perfect that you said that!!! That is the very first sensation I had- as I left the car!
