Christmas Wonderland Ornament by Shelley Nobel

Shelley Noble is an extraordinary mixed-media artist whose work feels as if it has been pulled straight out of a folktale. She creates handmade pieces that blend natural materials, hand-crafted textures, and miniature set-building techniques in to create the spirit of Halfland.

This is a Christmas ornament—one of many that Shelley has sent me. Inside this little bottle sits a perfectly tiny Christmas tree, dressed in teeny-tiny hand-painted ornaments and the smallest packages you can imagine, each one tied up with delicate string. Every detail is so impossibly small and so lovingly made that it feels like magic happened right there at her fingertips.

Her hands must be marvels of nimbleness to create such miniature wonders. Mine, on the other hand—well, the best I could manage would be to drink whatever was in the bottle before she transformed it into this tiny world.

Shelley’s composes scenes that feel part diorama, part illustration, part stop-motion set. Every component is shaped, painted, and assembled by hand.

There is a song called “Time in a bottle”. This bottle reminds me of that song. I want to step inside that world for a little while.
