Today, Chelsea and I went scavenging through secondhand shops, not looking for anything in particular. We didn’t go to any of the curated shops. We wanted to dig — the bottom shelf, the forgotten corners, the places where you have to look twice and then a third time. I call that- « eye adjustment, » to things you’re not used to seeing.
We were surprised to bump into other brocante dealers coming in and out of these places. Not because dealers don’t go to shops like this, but because we saw them and they saw us. We were all scouting hoping to find the needle in the haystack.
Look at Chelsea’s arms in the photo — and know that this wasn’t even the beginning. At one point she said to me, “Mom, you have to say this on your blog: go shopping with my mom and you’re going to be buying things you didn’t even know you needed.”
She needed everything she was carrying, and what I was carrying too.
Chelsea found a collection of baskets, and a light fixture for the children’s bathroom. I found a lamp base and a basket that could make a wonderful shade, for her desk, all for about ten euros. Seek and you shall find.
Is this enticing you to come along with us? Even if you don’t have a reason. Even if you don’t need anything. Even if you don’t want anything. Just for the fun of it.
Time flew by, as it always does. We raced home to pick up Olivia from school and to send Gabriel off with Yann for a weekend of skiing —
Arms full, day full, heart full.
