The Nutcracker

We went to see The Nutcracker after watching it countless times at home. Their favorite part has always been the Mouse Battle, not the Sugar Plum Fairy. Olivia’s nickname comes from Claire. Every time we watch The Nutcracker, we try our grand jetés and pirouettes, though the grand jeté never quite lands the way we imagine. We dressed up for the evening and had wonderful seats, waiting eagerly for the curtain to rise.

My favorite moment was watching Olivia slip off her chair, then stand completely still, one hand in the air like a ballerina, her mouth open in awe and eyes sparkling wide. She held that pose for what felt like forever. When the mouse battle began, she leaned over and whispered, “They’re not real—they’re in costume,” and I replied, “What’s up with that?”

At intermission, knowing it was late and over an hour’s drive home, I asked if we should stay or go. They said in unison, “Stay.” So we did. What a wonderful evening it was.
