Have You Hugged a Tree?

The gift of hugging a tree.

We have something called the biophilia hypothesis- basically, we are wired to feel better when we connect with nature.

Hugging a tree as isn’t strange- it is a way for our nervous system to recognize something ancient and familiar.

This tree in the middle of a field close to where my home is- gives an incredible energy – a healing grace.

It is no wonder I have nearly a thousand photos of trees on my phone.

“I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.”

— Joyce Kilmer, from “Trees” (1913)

    I fondly recall the trees along an historic Roman road you took us to visit in Provence. I thought of reading Julius Caesar’s Gallic Wars in high school Latin, and never imagining I’d ever actually see Gaul!

    And as a native northern Californian, of course I love our coast redwoods!
