Letting Go of Fear- Learning to with Guidance

I’ve been afraid of dogs my entire life— for no known reason— most animals, really. My friend Jennifer has loved dogs for as long as I’ve known her, and her chocolate Lab ( chocolate doesn’t that say it sweet) is calm, timid, impossibly gentle.

She has slowly challenged my fear— sat by my feet or rested at my side. I reached out and touched her—the third dog I’ve ever touched. I wanted to wrap my arms around her, but they weren’t moving- Instead, she came back and gently nudged me. Jennifer smiled and said that meant she wanted affection.

I thought that was such a tender thing—to ask so softly.

Perhaps love is like that. Not demanding that we do more or be more, but gently inviting us, one small step at a time.

Today, I took one of those steps.

Those gentle eyes! Dogs are so intuitive. She is telling you, “Corey, you have nothing to fear… be my friend.”

  5. How wonderful you overcame your fear! Jim and I had chocolate labs, mother, Sally and daughter Bella. They helped fill the void when Ash left for college. I had always been a cat person, but those two changed my mind. Their presence kept us company when the house was so quiet. When they left us, our hearts were broken…and still are,

It is heartbreaking to lose a long loved pet, but it is equally heartbreaking to never have loved one. I’m sorry for your lifelong fears Cory, but happy that you are feeling comfortable enough to move towards overcoming them.

Dogs do have an innate sense of who is nervous and who needs there care and interest. She seems the perfect dog for you to get to know. Slowly but surely. Dogs truly are a persons best friend, very few are aggressive and usually it is because they have been hurt or scared. I have two little furry buddies and would not be without them. Well done for meeting the challenge…Jennie, NZ
